Two duvet sets
Description of your project:
'My project was to make a new pair of curtains for my daughter Rebecca's bedroom. I was redecorating my daughter's bedroom on a tight budget and was dismayed at the high cost of ready made curtains in the shops.
How you made your project:
'I sourced two beautiful duvet covers from the Tesco sale which cost £6 each. I then simply removed the old curtain tape from the previous pair of curtains, and attached them to the top of each duvet cover, leaving a one inch gap which produced a frilled top edge when the curtains were pulled into pleats.'
'It was then simply a matter of hemming the curtains to the correct length, and machine sewing the hems. As I used a whole duvet cover for each window there was no need to line the curtains. My daughter is a light sleeper so later on I did source blackout linings from an online retailer in order to make the curtains darker.'
'The duvet sets each came with a pillow case, which I then used to make two cushion covers which my daughter loved!'
Where you got your inspiration from:
'I decided that it would be cheaper to make them myself. I asked my mother for advice, as when I was growing up money was tight so she was always making things for our family (curtains, duvet covers, clothes etc). My mother has always been a real inspiration to me as she can turn her hand to anything. She suggested using two single duvet covers to make the curtains.'
'The best part about making something yourself is that you can guarantee that nobody else will have the same thing, and as my mother would say if you have a sewing machine and an imagination you can make anything!'
