Don’t throw away your old blouses or shirts, instead transform them into pretty scented lavender hearts – perfect for hanging in your wardrobe or placing in your lingerie drawer
You will need
old shirt or blouse in lightweight cotton fabric
dried lavender flowers
pencil or tailor’s chalk
scrap paper to make a template
small funnel (optional)
Draw a heart-shaped outline on a piece of scrap paper to the desired size of your finished lavender bag, then draw a 1.5cm seam allowance all the way around the edge. Cut out. Pin the template on the shirt and use a pencil or tailor’s chalk to draw round it. Cut out two heart shapes for each lavender bag you want to make.
With right sides facing, pin the two heart shapes together, then sew a 1.5cm hem around the edge, leaving a gap of about 5cm on one straight side to allow you to add the lavender. Snip around the edges, making sure not to cut through your stitching, this will make it easier to turn the heart the right side out.
Turn the heart right side out and fill with lavender. Using a small funnel will make the job less fiddly. Once your lavender heart is filled, hand-stitch the gap closed using small slip stitches.
Make a ribbon loop and bow and stitch to the top of the heart. Finish by sewing a button to the front of the heart.
