Furnishing a small bathroom in style

Posted 15th Jan 2014

A small bathroom presents a unique design challenge, as you seek to make the most of the space you have available without going too far and creating a cluttered look.

There are a number of techniques you can use when designing your bathroom to ensure that you get the maximum use out of your space, giving you a suite which is warm and inviting, rather than depressingly cramped. We caught up with experts at Bathrooms by Screwfix, who gave us some of their favourite tips for ensuring that while your bathroom may be short on space, it will never be short on style:

Keep it cool

Colour plays a key role in not only the way your bathroom looks, but the way it feels. The use of pale, cool colours will ensure that your bathroom is a serene environment, in which you can fully relax and unwind. The fact that you can properly relax in your bathroom is hugely important not only for your own benefit, but for the design of the bathroom. If users of your bathroom feel relaxed and comfortable in your bathing space, they are less likely to notice the fact that it's a little short on space.

The Never-ending storage

The amount of storage space available can make or break a small bathroom, with insufficient storage likely to lead to your suite appearing messy or cluttered. There are a number of great storage options available which will not take up too much space in either your bathroom or your budget. Stylish and sturdy cupboards are the perfect place to put any of the products you use to keep yourself looking good, keeping them out of sight of the other users of your bathroom.

Mirror mirror on the wall...
Mirrors have always been a bathroom essential. However, they can also be extremely helpful for creating the impression of space in your bathroom, with two opposite mirrors reflecting off each other helping to make the room look considerably bigger than it really is.

Let there be light
Is it possible to add extra windows or a skylight to your bathroom? If the location or style of your bathroom does not allow for this, how about some extra lighting to bring the room to life and brighten up those dark corners? By making the entire room clearly visible, you are able to make the best use of your space and help add to the impression of a spacious room.

Art attack
One way to take the focus off the size of your bathroom is to simply make it more attractive. Hanging some of your favourite pictures or photographs on the wall can help to make the bathroom feel more homely, and provide something to look at, instead of the amount of space which may be available. Adding some creativity to the walls can go a long way towards creating a bathroom you can be proud of.

Shower power
The right choice of shower enclosure can make a big difference to the amount of space on offer in the room, with quadrant enclosures one of the most popular options for a smaller bathroom as they help to save space, while providing an enjoyable showering experience.

Do things your way
Keep thinking of ways you can improve your bathroom, and don't be afraid to experiment. Practice makes perfect, and by continuing to explore new ways to maximise the potential of your bathroom space, you will eventually end up with a space to be proud of.
