Star of Kirstie & Phil's Love it or List it, Phil Spencer, reveals a few industry secrets on how to save money in your home…
As a classic gent with a keen eye on the property market, Phil Spencer has certainly earned his stripes when it comes to home improvement advice.
From finding a growing family their next home, to getting you on the property ladder, Phil has now journeyed into the world of energy with Smart Energy GB, to encourage all you UK dwellers to create a cleaner, greener and smarter Britain with a smart meter.
That's why we've teamed up with Phil and the Smart Energy GB team to bring you Phil's top tips on how to stop wasting energy and, above all, avoid a shock bill!
1. Time is money – literally!
"It might sound obvious, but if you put your heating on a timer you won’t accidentally forget to turn it off – and rack up an unpleasant bill in the process."
2. Boiler TLC
"It’s a mundane task that we all put off, but getting your boiler regularly serviced and updated can save you a lot of money. What’s more, it’s much less likely to give up the ghost on the coldest day of the year so far!"
3. Fill your fridge
"If your supplies are running a bit low before the weekly food shop, reuse bottles of tap water to keep the fridge full. It takes up far less energy to keep a full fridge cool than an empty one."
4. Savvy showers
"Having a long hot shower is always tempting on a cold winter night, but modern high-power showers can actually use as much water in five minutes as it takes to fill a bath! Consider installing an energy efficient shower head to save on both your water and heating bill."
5. Let there be (energy saving) light!
"Replace regular light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs, or LEDs – it’s simple but effective. Over an energy saving LED lightbulb’s lifetime, it could cut up to £240 from your energy bills."
6. Smart shopping
"Ask your energy supplier for a smart meter, which will help you see exactly how much you’re spending on energy and it will act as a prompt to turn off items which you’re not actively using, such as the lights in an empty room."
"It might not be the most glamorous job but remember to vacuum the refrigerator coils. Any dirt, debris or pet hair caught in the coils can make the appliance very inefficient."
