JOMO: the perfect January activity

JOMO: the perfect January activity

Posted 11th January

A combination of the cold weather, a post-Christmas lack of money and the inevitable illness that currently seems unavoidable means January is far from the nation's favourite month.

While there's undoubtedly lots to moan about, Style Director and Scandinavian lifestyle expert, Catharina Björkman, at Swedish wood burning stove brand Contura is suggesting we start to embrace JOMO - aka, the 'Joy of Missing Out'.

The opposite of FOMO, JOMO emphasises those feelings of relief and happiness, as we turn our back on social plans, and instead opt to spend our time relaxing, resting and enjoying ourselves at home.

So, what does this involve? Well, these tips could be just what you need to turn your home into a sanctuary where JOMO becomes an option...

1. Staying in is the new going out

After an indulgent festive season, many of us will be avoiding looking at our bank balances. January gives us a great excuse to spend time thinking of fun ways to remain entertained, without having to go out. So, before you go out for an expensive meal, instead think about getting your friends to come to you, so you can cook your own feast. Another option is to host a games night - social occasions don't necessarily need to be expensive.

2. Rock those cosy vibes

Making sure your home is a welcoming and cosy environment will mean the time you spend at home becomes far more enjoyable. That's where Mysig comes in - this Swedish term is all about cosiness and making sure we're kind to ourselves. Think about enjoying those little indulgences and taking the pleasure in the simple things.

Mysig emphasises the embracing of downtime, as we make our homes as cosy as possible. Create a cosy environment where you can spend quality time with yourself or with others. Swedes get through the long winter months by devoting themselves to Mysig living - so how can you do this?

Simple! Dim the lights, burn some scented candles, find a good book and add some cosy furnishings and blankets to your room achieve that snug vibe.

3. Me time

The time that you spend at home presents numerous possibilities. For instance, you can run a relaxing bath, work on your culinary skills, bake a delicious treat for yourself, listen to a podcast, or try that TV show everyone's been going on about. In short, don't feel guilty about staying in! It's a great chance to have some 'me time'.

4. A tidy home is (truly) a tidy mind

If you're lacking space or feel like you have too much on your mind, it could be time to declutter. Begin by going through your clothes and shoes - and make sure you're strict here. Does it fit? Have you used it in the past 12 months? Does it make you happy? If it's a no, you know the answer – chuck or take to a charity shop! This will also apply to books you've never read or any items that you feel are not useful anymore.

If you need something to make sure you keep things in order, you could do a lot worse than embrace the storage box. They're inexpensive yet provide a stylish touch to your home for storing anything, be it paperwork or bedding. An orderly home will leave you feeling so much better!

5. Don't feel bad about staying in

Social media can make us feel everyone is constantly out and having the best of times. However, this simply isn’t always the case.

While we are naturally sociable - hence FOMO - it's important that you remember social media only offers the snapshot of people's lives that they want you to see, and it will usually only reveal the most interesting and happiest of times.

So, how do you prevent FOMO from taking over? Well, turn your phone off for periods of time to help you focus on switching off from the outside world, and start dedicating your time to some enjoyable home relaxation instead.
