Take the worry out of moving this Christmas with our top tips and must-dos!
You’ve found your dream home, your mortgage is approved and your solicitor calls with news of your completion date… it's December! On top of all the pre-move anxiety, you've now got to tackle Christmas at the same time.
But don't panic. Because we've teamed up with NHBC, a leading warranty provider for new homes, to give you a list of essential festive move advice!
1. Tell Santa and his friends…
If your children haven't written their Christmas lists yet, then make sure they include a little note to Santa saying where they will be this year – you don't want any pre-Christmas tantrums!
Plus, don't forget to tell Santa's Elves at the Post Office too, by putting a mail redirect in place. That way you'll still get all your lovely Christmas cards!
TOP TIP: Pop your new address details into your Christmas cards, to save you from doubling up on postage with new address cards.
2. Prep, prep and prep again!
Get ahead by buying and wrapping all your presents before you move and storing them at a friend’s house. You really don't want the hassle of guessing which box your sticky tape is in on Christmas Eve.
Don’t forget to add an extra gift just for them as a thank you for storing them all.
3. Countdown to moving day
Use your Advent calendars as a countdown to moving day. By showing your children when the day is and making it into a fun activity, they can get excited, rather than getting anxious or worried.
4. Put the essentials aside
No one wants to spend the whole of December trawling through boxes to find your socks or jeans. Get a suitcase and fill it with your most essential items – just like if you were going on holiday. Think toothbrush, hairbrush, deodorent, phone chargers and your most worn items of clothing. That way you can quickly access the essentials.
5. Put the fun into packing
Moving in December doesn’t mean you have to forget all about feeling festive. Clearly label your Christmas decoration packing boxes and ask the removal company to put those boxes in the bathroom, as this will make them easy to find so you can prioritise decorating your new home.
Get creative with your packing tape as well. Duck Tape do a great variety of Christmas colours and patterns, take a look here!
6. Decorating your new home
A new home can often feel a bit empty at first. So seize the Yuletide and make the most of your lovely Christmas decorations.
Focus your efforts on the spaces where you will spend most time – a family room, or perhaps the kitchen-diner. If you don’t have time to decorate a tree, think about wrapping a garland around the banister and hanging fairy lights over the fireplace.
7. Sugar, spice and all things nice
There’s nothing like the smell of Christmas to get you in the festive spirit. Consider lighting candles with the scent of cinnamon, mulled spices and oranges to create a warm and cosy feeling.
Just remember, Christmas is a time for giving and spending time with your loved ones. Don't worry about the boxes – they can wait until the New Year!
