Ahead of his appearance at The Cake & Bake Show this sunday, we caught up with GBBO series three winner, John Whaite, on all things Bake Off!
What would your banquet pie have looked like from this week's episode?
"I'm quite glad that I wasn't in a series like the current one. I'd be terrible and I think I'd have to drop out!
"The emphasis now seems to be on artistic creations, like the biscuit chandelier, and while I don't berate that, for me that's not really baking. When something is made to look like that, it no longer resembles food in my opinion."
What was the hardest thing about being in the Bake Off tent?
"I think the hardest thing was trying to keep your wits about you and trying to maintain a certain acceptable level of emotion. When something goes wrong and the producers and cameras come running over, it feels like jeopardy.
"Of course they have to condone that – it's part of the natural events of the show. But when you're a contestant it does throw you off-guard and make you feel like screaming. Especially if you're like me and have no control over your emotions. I'm very reactive and that was really difficult. I'm better now that I'm a bit older and wiser though!"
Do you keep in touch with your fellow bakers?
"I did. I was in touch with Catherine for a long time and I regularly see Ed and Jo, the winners of the first and second series. But apart from that, no I don't. Life gets in the way unfortunately. You come to the tent as 12 different people from different walks of life and you have that one thing in common for a while, but slowly the ebb and flow of everyday life takes hold again and you revert back to what you were before."
What were Mel and Sue like? They seemed quite mischievious…
"Mel and Sue were amazing! They were little imps, but so cute, so helpful and lovely. We got the feeling that they were very much on our side in terms of our welfare. They were completely indispensable to have as someone to lean on.
"When things were going wrong you just needed someone to give you a hug, and they offered that. They were our vicarious mothers!"
We heard that if a baker was having a tough time Mel and Sue would run over and swear at on camera so they couldn't use that footage – is that true?
"Yeah they did, they were very good like that. We all picked up on that as well, so if something was going wrong we'd just start swearing and saying profane awful things so it would be too littered with 'bleeps' for the BBC to want to use it."
What bakes can the audience at The Cake & Bake Show expect to see from you this sunday?
"I'm going to be doing choux pastry. I'll be showing interesting ways of using choux pastry, rather than just baking it and I'll be uncovering the secrets and the technique behind the actual making of the pastry and the application.
"I saw some of this week's bakers were having trouble with their choux. I find that most home bakers who are great at puff pastry struggle with choux and that's because of the very specific technique you need to use and I'll be showing that on sunday!"
