Nine of the best budget-friendly superfoods!

Nine of the best budget-friendly superfoods!

Posted 12th September

The idea of eating an ultra-clean diet filled with super-foods seems idyllic in some ways: You'll casually peruse the health food shops after a morning of yoga and meditation, getting ready to feel like a whole new you after the most nutritious meal imaginable.

Then you get to the checkout and oops – you'll have to remortgage your home in exchange for a handful of pine nuts, thank you very much.

But while some superfoods carry a hefty price, we've managed to scout out the best budget-friendly foods with help from PromotionalCodes.org.uk that will deliver high nutrition at a fraction of the price.

1. Pea Protein

Pea protein is the ultimate whey protein alternative, coming in at around half the price! As well as being both dairy and gluten-free, it is also 100% vegan friendly. With 1kg of pea protein totting in online at £5.99 on average, it's great for those trying to build muscle.

2. Offal

Okay, just hear us out on this one. Offal, such as liver, brain, kidney, beef and pork hearts and other organs are all packed full of iron, amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids and essential antioxidants. Plus, they’re also mega cheap! Ask any butcher and you’ll go home with a bag full of offal and still have change from a fiver. Winner winner, pork heart dinner…

3. Goat Meat

Goat meat contains higher levels of iron and less fat than pork, lamb and beef! It's used all the time in Caribbean cuisine and is actually the most widely eaten meat in the world. Prices start from around £5 for a four-pack of burgers or six sausages, and popular joints such as leg, shoulder and chops will come in at a little more depending on weight, with a kilo joint averaging around £12.50.

4. Maca Powder

Maca powder comes from the root of the Maca vegetable – a plant similar to brocolli and kale – and has quite a nutty and earthy taste.

This superfood can be bought for around £5 from most supermarkets and is a great natural resource of vitamins, boasting large amounts of vitamins B, C, and E as well as calcium, zinc and iron to name but a few!

5. Turmeric

I think we've all seen enough tumeric lattes on instagram to last a lifetime… but nonetheless, tumeric is still a fab superfood. Due to its curcumin content, an ingredient famous for its powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, this root is said to have effective medicinal properties. Around 100g of organic turmeric will cost you just £1.99 online.

6. Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is packed with healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants and its vitamin E content does wonders for your skin. Plus, unlike whole avocados, you won't have to use it within that special 10-minute window that an avocado is actually ripe for! Avocado oil is available for around £3 in supermarkets for 250ml of oil.

7. Bones

Bones are the basis of all great stocks and broths, all which have great health properties. Broth is full of essential minerals and protein, and makes an excellent base to soups, casseroles and other traditional meat dishes. Plus, it's incredibly cheap as well. Just ask your butcher!

8. Coconut Sugar

Coconut sugar offers more vitamins and minerals than regular refined white sugar, and it also has a high iron and zinc content. You can pick up a bag of organic coconut sugar online for around £3 or £4!

9. Goji Berries

Goji berries contain a multitude of vitamins and minerals, such as iron and vitamins A, C and B2. Dried goji berries can be found in most supermarkets for around £4. Simply sprinkle a few on your morning porridge!
