An innovative new idea from IKEA is set to get the nation both reading and relaxing
Partnering with the Man Booker Prize, the Swedish retailer has launched the IKEA Reading Room, which will include the 13 longlisted titles to read, enjoy and then take home for free.
Recent research from IKEA has revealed a staggering 21.6 million (33 per cent) of us will only read when we're on our summer holiday, which has prompted the two partners to act.
The IKEA Wembley store will be hosting a reading haven in the Living Room space, complete with reading lamps, chairs and BILLY bookcases which will be filled with a selection of 2018's finest fiction.
The purpose of the initiative is to alleviate stress, thus helping to make the home feel like a haven again. Shockingly, 59 per cent of workers have said they now feel under more pressure to respond to emails when they're at home. Therefore, preventing the workplace from entering the home environment has never been more important. One of the best ways to do this is undoubtedly by disappearing into a good book.
In fact, research from the University of Sussex has revealed reading for only six minutes a day can help to lower stress levels by over two-thirds. This follows a study from IKEA that found 64 per cent of Brits consider TVs, laptops and smartphones to cause stress and bring the fast pace of the outside world into a place that should instead be for relaxing.
Luis Lopez, Head of Living Rooms, IKEA UK and Ireland, said: "The Reading Rooms give us a chance to use our retail space to inspire people to think about the importance of relaxation at home. Reading at home is good for your health and the living room is the perfect, tranquil setting to do so, providing a peaceful haven from the outside world."
"In partnering with The Man Booker Prize we know we are giving people the chance to read the best of this year’s books."
There are hour-long slots available in the IKEA Reading Rooms, available from 10am-6pm Tuesday to Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.
