5 things to do in the garden this bank holiday

Posted 4th May

With temperatures set to hit the high twenties, this bank holiday is the perfect time to get out in the garden and enjoy the great outdoors.

But if you don't know where to start, don't panic, because we've spoken to Phil McCann at Great Little Garden to give you our guide to the top five things to do in your garden this bank holiday weekend.

1. Pot up a container

Bedding plants offer great value for money and, once planted and growing quickly, will flower all summer long. They are also low maintenance, allowing you to kick back and relax all summer long!

2. Clean your garden furniture

The weather forecast is looking good for most of us, so dust off your chairs, revarnish or pressure wash where necessary and air those cushions! Hopefully you will be using them a lot over the coming months.

3. Mow the lawn

OK, it’s been terrible weather with plenty of rain, but that has meant your lawn has grown quickly. A neat trim beats a shaggy, tufty look every time. Set the blades on your mower to a medium cut and get things into shape.

4. Compost bins

If you haven’t got one then pop to your local garden centre and get one. If you have, then start feeding its voracious appetite with a 50/50 mix of grass cuttings, leaves and twiggier material with ripped cardboard. Get a garden fork into the heap every week, give it a good mix around and you will be on your way to creating the heartbeat of a healthy garden.

5Weed

It's not the most glamourous of jobs, but a necessary one. After all, the recent wet weather has stopped you going out into the garden but has only encouraged weed growth.

Remove weeds before they flower and you will save yourself a whole heap of trouble later in the year. Dig out perennial weeds such as bindweed and ground elder, and ensure annual weeds such as bittercress are hoiked out before they flower. One day of the Bank Holiday should do the trick leaving you time to sit back and enjoy the weather.
