Renowned for his charasmatic presenting on one of our favourite television shows, we spoke to Kevin McCloud about Grand Designs Live, his approach to tackling a build, and the golden rule when designing a home for yourself!
What has been your favourite Grand Design?
"It's the same as the viewer favourite – The Woodland House by Ben Law. Most people wanted to either replicate it or marry him!"
If you were new to the homebuilding world, what would your plan of action be at Grand Designs Live?
"Get a brochure and plan your day. That way you can choose your area and really get your bearings. If you're a serious self-builder, then get some business cards and ask the companies that interest you to send their details to you. Plus, you can look up some websites in advance by looking on the Grand Designs Live website. We also have a lot of small suppliers whose work isn't so well-known that people can meet.
"I remember 10 years ago people said that exhibitions are dead, but it isn't true. Here you'll be be able to meet the makers!"
What’s the most important thing a new homebuilder can do when preparing/designing their build?
"Plan and prepare. You've got to train hard. Get a great architect and project manager who understand your needs and spend time finding the right people – don't just go for the easiest option.
"This is where Grand Designs Live can really help. The ask the experts panel is a great way to get free advice – it's one of our most popular features and we're really indebted to the volunteers who run that area."
Kevin McCloud will be appearing at Grand Designs Live at London’s ExCeL from 5th – 13th May 2018. For more information visit www.granddesignslive.com
