Declutter your wardrobe

Declutter your wardrobe

Posted 5th Apr 2013

The new season brings with it changing trends – both for your home and wardrobe. Decluttering your wardrobe can seem like an intimidating task but ultimately it will free up space and help you organise your belongs more effectively.

We spoke to the storage experts at Hammonds Furniture who gave their top tips on how best to approach this task:

Pack away the winter woolies
Winter is almost over and we're looking forward to warmer weather and lighter days. With this in mind, it might be worth taking out all of your winter woollies and putting them into storage. Fitted window seats are ideal for storing those extra winter layers and bulky bedding that doesn't need to be a permanent fixture in your wardrobe. They also look really pretty and are very on-trend right now. This, in turn, will create more space for your spring clothes and accessories.

Do you need it?
Have a serious think about the contents of your wardrobe. If something no longer fits or is several years old, are you really going to wear it again? Separate any clothes you haven’t worn in the last year and ask yourself if you still need them. And what about all of the belts/ties/scarves hanging there gathering dust? Be ruthless when it comes to making space – just make sure you don't replace the old clutter with new clutter!

Prioritise
If there are items in your wardrobe you use more often than others, or are particularly fond of, then think about incorporating an in-built display unit. This could be to show off your wonderful shoe or scarf collection. Display units will also encourage you to remain clutter-free, as you will be able to see the contents of your wardrobe.

Savvy storage
Pull-out rails are a great addition to a wardrobe and will help you keep your clothes neat and tidy, especially trousers. Another option is customised interior drawer storage, that will allow you to keep jewellery and bottles off surface areas. There are several storage options available for keeping shoes organised, from racks to specialised shelving – so say goodbye to the pile of mis-matched shoes on the floor of your wardrobe!

At the end of your de-cluttering session you should have plenty of things to throw away, re-home or give to charity. Your wardrobe should now have lots of extra space and the items you have decided to keep should now be organised in customised spaces.
