Have you ever struggled to fall asleep on a mattress that was too firm, spring or just not supportive enough? A low quality mattress doesn’t just keep you awake – it also has a negative effect on your posture and the quality of your sleep. The average person spends about a third of their life in bed, making it important to invest in a mattress that’s supportive enough to provide good posture, comfortable enough for deep sleep and designed for optimal support.

Unfortunately, many people sleep on mattresses that, while good enough to offer a reasonable night’s sleep, fall short in ways that are difficult to perceive when you’re used to sleeping on the same mattress every night. We spoke to the sleep experts at The Odd Mattress Company to learn more about how sleeping on a low quality mattress could be affecting your health, posture and daytime energy levels.

There’s no one-size-fits-all perfect mattress

Until relatively recently, researchers were convinced that most sleep-related health issues could be prevented by choosing a mattress with the optimal level of firmness. The “best” size, according to research, was medium-firm – a mattress that’s just soft enough to make sleeping comfortable, but firm enough to offer a strong level of back support to its users. We now know that medium-firm isn’t the be-all, end-all of mattresses. Because all of our bodies are different, there’s no one-size-fits-all perfect mattress for everyone. In fact, the best mattress for you might not be the best mattress for your partner.

Subtly different mattresses have seriously different effects

A recent in-depth study of mattress and sleep by Research Triangle International, which reviewed over 16,000 nights of sleep, found that even small differences in a mattress’s firmness and support can have a significant impact on sleep quality. Other research indicates that the medium-firm “perfect” mattress researchers once viewed as the best option for quality sleep is wrong, and that the best mattresses for deep, high quality sleep should be both supportive and comfortable. When choosing a mattress, it’s best to focus on balance. Your mattress should be as comfortable as possible to make falling and staying asleep simple, while offering an excellent level of support to keep your spine and shoulders healthy.

What are the health effects of choosing a bad mattress?

Do you struggle to find a comfortable sleeping position? If your mattress prevents you from falling asleep within 15 minutes of getting into bed, it could be affecting your sleep quality and preventing you from feeling completely alert in the daytime. Here’s a good litmus test for whether or not your mattress is as comfortable as it should be for optimal sleep:

Do you sleep better when you’re at home or when you stay in a hotel? If you consistently enjoy deeper sleep in hotel beds than you do in your own, your mattress could be preventing you from falling asleep on time, causing a variety of negative health effects ranging from stress and tiredness to high blood pressure. A stiff and uncomfortable mattress has health effects beyond low quality sleep. If your mattress is uncomfortable, you’re more likely to sleep in an unusual position to relieve pain, potentially placing stress on your entire posterior chain. This can lead to posture issues and back pain. Remember that you spend a third of your life in bed. Just like slouching for eight hours a day affects your back, sleeping in an unnatural position can have a serious negative effect on your spinal health.

Take sleep seriously by investing in a high quality mattress

Buying a high quality mattress isn’t a cost, but an investment. When your bed feels more comfortable and supportive, every aspect of your life improved, from energy levels, productivity and alertness throughout the day to your posture. There’s nothing quite like waking up in the morning after a night of deep, energising sleep. Give yourself a perfect night’s sleep every night by sleeping on a mattress that keeps you comfortable, supported and ready to start each day feeling confident.
