4 ways to make your home more mindful

Mindfulness is a hot trend for those seeking to improve their mental wellbeing and declutter the mind.

Doctors are advising it, celebrities are doing it, and now it has made its way into interior design.

 

If one of your new year’s resolutions has been to have a more mindful approach to life, cultivating a home environment that reflects a happy and calming atmosphere, is the perfect way to get you on the right track!

1. Declutter

There is nothing better than a spring clean and ridding your living environment of unnecessary mess. It works wonders for clearing the head and channeling peace and serenity.

If you’re fearful of decluttering or a bit of a hoarder, remember that it isn’t about getting rid of all your possessions, but rather about finding creative solutions for keeping unruly belongings at bay!

Choose dual-use furnishings such as bedside cabinets, ottomans and coffee tables with drawers, which will allow you to store away items when they’re not needed. Add a personal touch to your home without the clutter, and organise memories with carefully selected photos in minimalist wall-mounted frames or by creating a memory board.

2. Let nature in

Not only do house plants improve the air quality of our homes, they can be instrumental in increasing a sense of wellbeing. It is thought that having a plant to care for in the home can help us feel more in touch with nature, and even help us to sleep better.

Succulents and spider plants offer a low maintenance solution to your plant needs, helping to bring a breath of fresh air to your surroundings.

3. Make your bedroom a haven

Our bedrooms are where we spend time relaxing and recharging, and by adopting mindful sleeping habits, such as removing distracting technology and clutter from where we sleep, we are likely to sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed.

Bright colours are great, but in order to bring a sense of peace to your surroundings, a more muted colour palette is the perfect choice. In your bedroom, opt for more subtle tones such as sage greens and pale greys. Pastel colours such as rose quartz also work well to create calm, and give the room a soft, fresh feel. Personal touches such as lamps or candles provide ambient lighting, which can help to ease stress, allowing for a more relaxing sleep.

4. Think Sensory

When we think about decorating our home, we often think about how it looks, but it’s also a good idea to consider our other senses too.

In your living room or bedroom, opt for soft furnishings such as a blanket throw, comfortable pillows or a fluffy rug to promote a calming sensory environment.

For a relaxing fragrance, consider fresh flowers or essential oils such as lavender or bergamot.
