Winter-proof your home with our guide to essential heating

If you’re anything like us, the turning back of the clocks will have seen you brush off your winter woollies in time for the impending cold spell. However, it isn’t just your wardrobe that needs to be ready for the winter but your home should be prepped too! As we head towards Christmas, now is the time to make sure your home can handle the chill. Luckily, we have soak.com’s Virtual Interior Stylist, Naomi Cheney, on hand to offer some helpful tips on how to ‘winter proof’ your home so you can stay cosy.

The first thing you’ll need to do if you want to beat the winter freeze is calculate your BTU.

BTU stands for British Thermal Units and represents the level of heat a radiator provides. The required BTU level to heat your room will no doubt influence the size of your radiators, but luckily soak.com has plenty of options available to suit any sized room.

You can find a handy BTU calculator on the soak.com website to save you time but, in short, the figure is calculated by taking into account the dimensions of your room (width, length, height) and the type of windows you have.

With so many heating options available, it can become a little overwhelming, especially if this is the first time you are buying heating for your home. First things first, you’ll want either a plumbed radiator or an electric radiator.

A plumbed radiator will rely on a hot water system to heat your home. The hot water is taken from a boiler or tank and pumped around your home using a series of pipes. This Amie Radiator is a great example of a plumbed radiator that can double up as a real statement piece. Part of the ‘Everyday Eclectic’ range for soak.com’s The Hotel Collection, this traditional Colosseum Radiator offers a stylish twist with its sunshine yellow finish.

Electric radiators, on the other hand, use electrical power to heat your home. They can be controlled separately in each room and are not based around the use of a central heating system. It is possible to find radiators that you simply plug in but most will need to be installed.

Whether it’s for your bathroom or the rest of the home, soak.com has a range of electric radiators that will fit in beautifully with your room décor. One of the benefits of choosing an electric radiator is that the installation can be relatively straight-forward and low cost. soak.com’s 1600x450mm Francis Thermostatic Flat Panel Electric Towel Radiator comes with sleek chrome panels and comes complete with fixtures and fittings too!

Another decision you’ll want to make is whether you want your radiator to be horizontal or vertical. Horizontal radiators are great for their ability to stretch the width of rooms. You can also make the most of dead space underneath a window and its positioning will help combat cold air or drafts.

soak.com’s 600x100mm Blueberry Bubblegum Triple Panel Horizontal Colosseum Traditional Radiator is fresh yet sweet and will be a breath of fresh air to any room in your home. Pair it with natural stone for an on trend statement that will transform your room in an instant.

Vertical radiators are great choice if you’re looking for something a bit different! This Gloss White Glass Radiator is the ultimate in vertical design and is definitely a conversation piece. Complete with a designer glass finish, it is a far cry from your standard radiator and becomes a style statement all by itself.

Whatever you choose this winter, soak.com’s radiator range will have you covered. Make sure you don’t leave it too late before the chill kicks in to ensure you and all the family can stay warm this winter.
