Making the most of your garden

Making the most of your garden

The experts at Calor gas explain how rural, off-grid gardeners can make the most of their outdoor areas by choosing an underground LPG tank to store their heating fuel.

If you live in one of the four million UK homes without access to mains gas, you may rely on oil for heating your home. But this can come at a price – a large oil tank that takes up space and spoils the look of your garden.

However there is another option ideal for keen gardeners that means you don’t have to sacrifice your outdoor living area – LPG.

LPG in the home

You’ll probably be familiar with LPG bottles for camping and caravanning, but you can also use the gas in your home too. LPG is just like mains gas, and features all the same benefits of convenience and versatility.

Unlike mains gas though, LPG users store their gas on site. One option is an underground LPG tank, which can be buried and hidden from view. This means the only thing that is visible in your garden is a green cover in the grass, which provides access for a delivery driver for when it's time for a top-up.

There is another option too; gas bottles which can be placed neatly in a case, usually against your house.

Because it’s just like having mains gas, LPG perfectly suited to heating and hot water, as well as cookers, gas fires and even tumble dryers! If you love to cook, you’ll have an instant, controllable flame and the additional reassurance that you can still rustle up dinner in the event of a power cut.

You may also choose to have an external BBQ point fitted, meaning you’re able to use your home energy supply to cook outdoors, instead of running your gas BBQ from a bottle.

Safe and secure

By choosing LPG, you can rest assured that you won’t fall victim to fuel theft, which is common in rural areas as oil tanks are relatively easy to identify, pierce, and siphon oil from. This could leave you with a nasty oil spill to clean up too.

In contrast, LPG is virtually impossible to steal. Underground tanks are not only a more secure option, but also leave more space for you to enjoy your garden. Calor are currently offering installation of an underground tank and gas connection for only £1500.

Even after installation, you don’t need to worry about running out of fuel as Calor tanks are fitted with automatic top-up technology that orders fuel top ups when required. Calor also has the UK’s largest LPG delivery fleet, giving you extra peace of mind that there is always a plentiful supply.

LPG is one of the cleanest fossil fuels available, and it’s also a perfect partner fuel for use with renewable systems, such as air-source heat pumps or solar panels, which can be a great option if you decide you want an even greener energy supply.

There’s a fantastic range of A-rated, high efficiency LPG boilers on the market too, which are compatible with the latest thermostatic controls, helping you reduce the amount of energy you use for your heating and hot water.

Switching to Calor gas couldn’t be easier, it’s simple and hassle-free and our team will work with you to decide on the best option suited to you and your new home.
